Sequel to Driftways

The Society is interested in collecting information about changes in the town of Richmond since the arrival of electricity (1920's), closure of the mills (1930 to date) and the construction of Interstate 95 (1950's). This information will be used to write a sequel to the book Driftways into the Past.

It is proposed that information be collected by oral histories.

Anyone interested in giving an oral history please call President Wolke at (401) 364-7057.

update:

The Driftways Too group continues work on the new book. We welcome assistance in collecting narratives and information regarding events and changes in the town from 1900 to 2000. A report on the effect of Rte. 95 on the towns of Richmond and Hopkinton is proceeding. We have maps and aerial and ground photos collected, but need stories of the people's lives and farms that were disrupted as well as the stories of businesses on old Rte. 3 that fell on hard times.

Upgrade of the Bell School and Old Town Clerk's Office Museums

Old Town Clerk's Office, Carolina

The Society owns and maintains two historical buildings: The Bell School (1826) and the Old Town Clerk's Office (OTC circa 1840). The Bell School houses memorabilia of the school districts that once exhisted in town. Much work is needed to maintain and upgrade this facility. The OTC in the village of Carolina is being used to house memorabilia of that village. The project is in its early stages and much needs to be done.

Continued Archiving

Recently the Society began archiving its extensive collection using the museum software known as PastPerfect. This is an ongoing project under the leadership of our archivist Patricia Millar.
